Islanders reminded to take precautions during extreme cold temperatures

The Province of Prince Edward Island is advising all Islanders to take precautions as extreme cold temperatures and wind chills are forecast for this weekend. These conditions may pose an increased risk to health and safety, particularly for vulnerable populations.

During extreme cold conditions, it is important to take precautions to stay safe and warm to reduce the risk of frostbite and windburn:

  • Wear appropriate clothing, including layers;
  • Seek shelter;
  • Limit time outdoors for yourself and your pets, and bring them inside;
  • Move regularly to maintain body heat;
  • Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle when travelling;
  • Check in on family, friends and neighbours.

Islanders experiencing homelessness can call the Shelter Support Line 1-833-220-4722, available 24/7, or dial 2-1-1 to connect with services.

In the event of an emergency, municipalities may decide to open reception or warming centres to provide a place for people to gather or receive services. Search for a reception centre in your area by municipality name or reception centre name, here.
