Statement by Premier Rob Lantz on Mi’kmaw History Month

Premier of Prince Edward Island, Rob Lantz issued the following statement:

“October marks Mi’kmaw History Month, a time to learn more about the history, culture, language and traditions of the Mi’kmaq people.

The Mi’kmaq people have been part of the history of Prince Edward Island for thousands of years, and their contributions continue to be an important part of the province today. Learning more about that history, including the experiences of Mi’kmaq people, is an important part of reconciliation.

Throughout October, the Indigenous Relations Secretariat will offer a series of lunch-and-learn sessions led by Mi’kmaq presenters for public service employees. KAIROS Blanket Exercises will also be offered by the Lennox Island Mi’kmaq Cultural Centre, giving employees additional opportunities to learn more about Mi’kmaq history, culture and perspectives.

I encourage all Islanders to take part in Mi’kmaw History Month, by exploring the stories, traditions and cultures of the Mi’kmaq people, and to carry those lessons forward throughout the year.”
