Statement by Premier Rob Lantz and Minister Zack Bell on Emancipation Day

Premier Rob Lantz and Minister of Workforce and Advanced Learning Zack Bell issued the following statement: 

"Tomorrow is Emancipation Day, a day to recognize an important chapter in our shared history and to celebrate the many contributions Black Islanders have made, and continue to make, to our province.

It is also a time to acknowledge the difficult parts of our history. Slavery existed in Prince Edward Island and across Atlantic Canada. Recognizing that history helps us better understand our past and reminds us of the responsibility we all share to build a more inclusive future.

We encourage Islanders to take time to learn about the history, experiences, and accomplishments of PEI’s Black community. Emancipation Day is an opportunity to reflect, to listen, and to reaffirm our commitment to standing against anti-Black racism and discrimination.

The Government of PEI remains committed to its Anti-Racism Action Plan and continues to offer Anti-Racism Grants and Anti-Racism Microgrants to support projects that combat racism and benefit racialized and Indigenous communities. Our government also provides annual core funding to organizations that advance racial understanding and support the well-being of PEI’s Black community. 

We encourage all Islanders to attend the annual celebration of Emancipation Day by the Black Cultural Society of PEI in Rochford Square, formerly the Bog, tomorrow from 3 to 6 p.m.”
