Statement from Minister Jenn Redmond on Sexual Assault Awareness Week
Today, Minister Jenn Redmond, Minister responsible for the status of women issued the following statement recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Week:
“This week, October 1 to 7, is Sexual Assault Awareness Week, a province-wide initiative that encourages islanders to learn, listen and take action to prevent sexual violence and support survivors.
Sexual violence affects individuals, families and communities across the province. This week is an opportunity to listen to survivors, learn more about the realities of sexual violence and reflect on how each of us can help create safer and more respectful communities.
Throughout the week, Islanders can participate in educational events, discussions and community activities designed to increase understanding of sexual violence, challenge harmful attitudes and build the skills needed to support survivors. I want to recognize the PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre for the work they do to organize events and collaborate with partners throughout the week to raise awareness about sexual violence, strengthen community connections and promote a culture of consent and respect across our province.
Prevention starts with awareness, education and a willingness to have important conversations. By promoting consent, respect, and healthy relationships, we can help reduce stigma, support healing and foster communities where everyone feels safe.”
