Province expands support for fertility care

The Government of Prince Edward Island is modernizing its support for fertility treatment by giving Islanders more choice and flexibility in accessing fertility care.

Through the Fertility Treatment Funding Program, eligible applicants will now receive a lifetime maximum benefit of $20,000 per household for eligible fertility treatment expenses, regardless of household income. The new program replaces the annual funding limits and income thresholds under the previous program, allowing people to access support based on their individual treatment needs.

"Building a family can be a long and emotional journey, and fertility treatments can come with significant costs. Making that care more affordable is one way our government can make things a little easier for people. It’s a practical approach that provides greater support for Islanders as they make personal decisions about their care.”

- Premier Rob Lantz

The program delivers on government’s commitment to modernizing fertility treatment support.  Budget 2026 included an additional $705,000 to enhance the program and help more people access fertility care funding.

"Fertility treatment doesn’t always follow a set timeline, and our program should reflect that. We heard that applicants need more flexibility when accessing support. These changes respond to that feedback and give people more choice in how and when they use the funding. This is another way we’re taking action to make healthcare more accessible for Islanders.”

- Minister of Health and Wellness Cory Deagle

Funding is available for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment expenses, including initial consultation fees and associated prescribed medications. Eligible expenses incurred on or after January 1, 2026, may also be reimbursed, if they fall within an applicant’s approved funding period from the previous Program and they have not been previously reimbursed.

These changes followed a program review that incorporated feedback and recommendations from fertility advocates and community partners. Recommendations included removing income limits, increasing available funding, and expanding eligible expenses to cover initial consultation fees.
