Province adds 80 long-term care beds in Cornwall

The Government of Prince Edward Island announced that 80 new private long-term care beds will be developed in Cornwall to help meet growing demand and improve access to care for Island seniors.

The Mount Continuing Care Community has been awarded the contract to build Cornwall’s first long-term care facility, which is expected to open in April 2029.

This project represents an important step in government’s commitment, announced in the 2025 Budget, to add up to 175 new long-term care beds across Prince Edward Island to help meet growing demand and relieve pressure on the healthcare system.

Through a 30-year agreement, the province will support the construction and operation of the new 80-bed home, cover residents’ medical costs, and provide accommodation subsidies. Once the facility opens, the province will provide up to $9.8 million annually to help offset accommodation costs for residents.

The added capacity will help reduce pressure on hospitals by creating more long-term care spaces for patients waiting in hospital for placement and by supporting Islanders with complex care needs who are waiting at home.

This announcement builds on previous government investments, such as adding more than 80 new licensed beds since 2024, which has increased overall capacity, as well as wage increases for workers in private long-term care homes.

Government recognizes the need for more long-term care capacity and is currently planning and developing further expansions across the province.

In Prince Edward Island, long-term care services are delivered through nine public and 11 private long-term care homes, offering 1,325 beds across the province. With this investment, total long-term care capacity will increase to 1,405 beds.
