Prince Edward Island Celebrates World Autism Awareness Day

Today, organizations around the world are celebrating the many contributions of people with autism, and the positive impact they have on their communities.

“World Autism Awareness Day is an excellent opportunity for Islanders to reflect on the richness, and many contributions neurodivergent individuals bring to our province, our communities, and our families,” says Minister of Education and Early Years Robin Croucher. “One in 34 Island children are diagnosed with autism, which reflects the growing importance of ensuring that services and supports are available and accessible in our province.”

Prince Edward Island continues to lead in this work as the only province with an Autism Coordination Act, supporting a coordinated and consistent approach across government and community services.

“Ensuring people with autism have meaningful access to the supports they need, and the opportunities they deserve, is a core priority for our department,” said Minister of Social Development and Seniors Barb Ramsay. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to fully participate in their community, and by working together across government, we are committed to delivering meaningful, long-term support for autistic Islanders and their families.”

World Autism Awareness Day is not only about awareness, but acceptance and celebration of the contributions of neurodivergent Islanders.

“World Autism Day provides an opportunity to recognize the experiences of autistic Islanders and the importance of awareness and acceptance,” said Minister of Health and Wellness Cory Deagle. “It also encourages conversation across government and communities about collaboration and shared understanding."
