Premier Lantz signs agreement for more accessible PEI

Premier Rob Lantz joined Canada’s Premiers in signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that reinforces a shared commitment to advancing accessibility, reducing barriers, and building a more inclusive society. 

Through the agreement, PEI will collaborate with other provinces and territories to improve how buildings are designed, renovated, and maintained, while promoting awareness and accountability for progress. 

“Accessibility is about more than infrastructure. It is about inclusion, dignity, and ensuring people with disabilities can fully take part in everyday life. PEI is committed to reducing barriers so Islanders can fully participate in their communities.”

To support the goals of the MOU, Premiers have committed to:

• Advancing accessibility and reducing barriers for people with disabilities, with the goal of a barrier‑free Canada.
• Working toward more consistent accessibility standards for new building construction across Canada, while respecting provincial and territorial authority.
• Supporting the use of accessibility best practices in publicly funded new builds and major renovations, from design through completion.
• Advocating for a federally funded National Accessibility Retrofit Fund to help improve accessibility in existing buildings.
• Establishing a national Many In Motion Day during National AccessAbility Week to encourage local leadership, maintain momentum and track progress.

The MOU states a shared commitment to improving accessibility in new construction and existing buildings. This will include collaboration with industry, municipalities, and community organizations to help create more accessible spaces across the country.

“Accessibility is about ensuring everyone can participate independently and equitably in everyday life,” said Minister of Social Development and Seniors and Minister Responsible for Women Barb Ramsay. “By listening to people with lived experience and working in partnership with communities and organizations, we can make Prince Edward Island more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for everyone.”

The agreement also recognizes the 40th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion World Tour, which remains an important symbol of leadership and advocacy on accessibility.
