Pharmacy Plus PEI marks four-year anniversary
This month marks the fourth anniversary of Pharmacy Plus PEI, with more than 91, 800 Islanders having accessed over 309,500 assessments since the program began.
The Pharmacy Plus PEI program supports 48 participating pharmacies in 15 communities across the province to renew eligible prescriptions and assess and prescribe for 35 common ailments and conditions.
“Every day, Islanders are receiving timely care close to home through Pharmacy Plus PEI. Since its inception, more than $6.67 million worth of direct patient care has been provided through the program. I want to thank pharmacists across the Island for the important service they provide in their communities. Their dedication to patient care has made this program a success.”
- Minister of Health and Wellness Cory Deagle
Since its launch, participating pharmacies have provided a range of assessment and prescribing services including the following (as of Oct. 15, 2026):
- Over 197,360 prescription renewal assessments (63.8 per cent of all Pharmacy Plus assessments)
- Over 21,800 urinary tract infection assessments (7 per cent)
- Over 9,400 allergic rhinitis assessments (3 per cent)
- Over 7,400 cough assessments (2.4 per cent)
- Over 5,800 nasal congestion assessments (1.87 per cent)
- Over 1,400 contraception assessments (since the service expanded in July 2023)
The program also expanded in December 2025 to include strep throat testing and treatment as part of sore throat assessments. More than 2,900 Islanders have accessed the service to date, helping divert patients from emergency departments and other primary health care settings.
“The Pharmacy Plus Program has demonstrated that an investment in pharmacy services results in increased access to health care,” said PEI Pharmacy Association executive director Erin MacKenzie. “We look forward to ongoing conversations, focused on expanding our scope of care through sustainable models that protect and enhance patient access”.
