Statement by Premier Thompson on Black History Month

Hon. Bloyce Thompson, Premier of Prince Edward Island, issued the following statement on Black History Month:

"February is Black History Month. It’s an important chance for all Islanders to learn about, celebrate, and honour the achievements and contributions of Black people here in Prince Edward Island and around the world.

Black history runs deep in PEI. The Bog, a former west end Charlottetown neighbourhood was established around 1810 by freed Black slaves brought to the Island by Loyalists in the 18th century. Home to 200 residents, most worked in domestic or labour-intensive jobs. It became known for the Bog School, one of PEI’s first integrated schools and for producing notable figures, such as champion boxers George Godfrey and George Byers, as well as the celebrated West End Rangers hockey team.

The Government of Prince Edward Island continues to increase funding for Anti-Racism Grants and  Anti-Racism Microgrants to support community-led initiatives that combat racism, promote inclusion, and strengthen community cohesion across the province.

The province’s Anti-Racism Action Plan for Prince Edward Island recognizes that racism affects people differently and requires tailored solutions. It prioritizes stronger government education and training, collaboration with the Anti-Racism Table, policy review, and building an inclusive, anti‑racist culture where racialized and Indigenous communities feel safe and represented.

The Black Cultural Society of PEI is organizing various events and programming throughout February, offering opportunities for Islanders to learn, celebrate, and connect. This year’s theme is Rooted in Legacy, Rising Together.

As we mark Black History Month, let’s all listen, participate in local events, and reflect on the lasting contributions of Black communities to the culture, progress, and identity of Prince Edward Island.”
