Statement by Premier Rob Lantz on Indigenous Veterans Day
Hon. Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island issued the following statement:
“Tomorrow, November 8, is Indigenous Veterans Day, observed annually to honour and remember the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces and in peacekeeping missions around the world.
It is a day of remembrance and reflection, recognizing the contributions of Indigenous people in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.
Indigenous Veterans Day was first commemorated in 1994 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Until 1995, Indigenous veterans were excluded from the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies and were denied equal benefits under the Veterans’ Land Act.
I encourage all Islanders to take time to learn about and reflect on the service of Indigenous veterans. Their legacy reminds us of the importance of remembrance and reconciliation.”
