Maritime partnership strengthens PEI’s energy future and economic growth

Today, Premier Rob Lantz signed a memorandum of understanding with the governments of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to help ensure Prince Edward Island has the energy it needs to support a strong and growing economy.

By working together on energy planning, infrastructure development, and cost management, the provinces will assess future electricity needs and explore opportunities for greater regional collaboration, strengthening PEI’s long-term energy security and supporting sustainable economic growth. 

“For Prince Edward Island, strong regional partnerships are essential to ensuring a reliable and secure supply of electricity. This agreement will help us work with our neighbours to explore opportunities, improve long-term planning, and make informed investments that benefit Islanders while strengthening the broader regional electricity system.”

The provinces will develop a roadmap for future cooperation, outlining actions to strengthen regional energy connections, improve system reliability, and maximize the value of current and future infrastructure. The work is consistent with the federal government’s National Strategy for an Electrified Canadian Economy.

“No province can address future energy challenges alone,” said Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Ernie Hudson. “By working collaboratively with our regional partners, we can improve planning, make better use of existing infrastructure, and identify opportunities that strengthen reliability, support growth, and deliver long-term benefits for Islanders.”

Ensuring PEI has a reliable, resilient, and sustainable energy system is a key provincial priority as set out in the Speech from the Throne and ministerial mandate letters.
