MacEwen Resigns from Executive Council
Over the past number of weeks, work has been underway to address an issue related to the application of the Conflict of Interest Act.
Under the current Act, members of Executive Council are required to place certain assets in a blind trust. For fishers, that creates a direct conflict with the owner-operator policy, which Mr. MacEwen respects and strongly supports.
The Conflict of Interest Commissioner established a timeline for compliance under the existing legislation. As work continues through the Legislative Assembly to address this matter, it has not been possible to complete those changes within that timeframe.
Given that, Sidney MacEwen has tendered his resignation as Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy in order to remain in compliance with the current Conflict of Interest Act.
He will continue to serve the residents of Morell-Donagh as their Member of the Legislative Assembly.
Work will continue to make the necessary amendments to the Conflict of Interest Act to fix the gap that is keeping a whole sector from serving our province in Executive Council.
