Applications open for 2027 Correctional Officer Training Program
The provincial government, in partnership with the Atlantic Police Academy is continuing to help Island residents pursue a career in correctional services at a reduced cost.
The Correctional Officer Training Program helps prepare students for a career in corrections and ensures there are enough qualified officers to staff correctional facilities.
“The Correctional Officer Training Program sets students up for success in a career in public safety. Graduates are eligible for an interview to be a casual correctional officer in PEI, and they can apply for permanent positions after one year. This helps make sure our corrections system is well-staffed with qualified people.”
- Minister of Justice and Public Safety Bloyce Thompson
The next cohort will begin on January 4, 2027. This six-month program consists of 17 weeks of coursework followed by a seven-week on-the-job training placement at correctional centres across the Island. Graduates of the program will receive a correctional officer diploma from the Atlantic Police Academy.
Individuals accepted into the program may be eligible for a range of supports, including a substantial tuition reduction. Participants may also receive assistance from Skills PEI to help cover costs such as mileage and childcare. Those who are unemployed or underemployed and meet eligibility criteria may qualify for Employment Insurance.
"Building a skilled workforce means creating opportunities for Islanders to pursue meaningful careers in every sector, including public safety," said Minister of Workforce and Advanced Learning Jenn Redmond. "Through SkillsPEI, we are helping individuals access the training and supports they need to succeed in the Correctional Officer Training Program while contributing to safer, stronger communities across Prince Edward Island."
The deadline to apply is November 13, 2026 at noon.
