Premier Lantz recognizes National Indigenous Veterans Day
Premier Rob Lantz issued the following statement recognizing National Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8:
“Today, we honour the First Nations, Inuit and Métis men and women who have served Canada with courage and dedication.
For generations, Indigenous people have answered the call to serve—from the world wars to peacekeeping missions and military operations around the world.
Yet despite their service and sacrifice, many Indigenous veterans returned home to discrimination and were denied benefits and opportunities afforded to other veterans. This injustice is an important part of our country’s history, and it must not be overlooked.
Here on Prince Edward Island, we honour the service of Mi’kmaw veterans and recognize the lasting impact of their sacrifices on their families and communities.
National Indigenous Veterans Day is a time to remember those who lost their lives, honour those who returned home and recognize the generations of Indigenous families who have supported those who serve.
We owe it to these veterans and to future generations to preserve their stories, and ensure their contributions are never forgotten.
Lest we forget.”
