Province proclaims Media Literacy Week
During Media Literacy Week, Island students, parents, and educators are encouraged to take part in activities and practices that strengthen digital skills and promote safe, responsible online behaviour.
Taking place October 26-30, Media Literacy Week, is a bilingual national initiative that has raised awareness about the importance of digital media literacy in classrooms, libraries, and communities across Canada for the past 21 years.
"As the digital world continues to evolve, it's becoming increasingly important for children and youth to learn how to navigate AI and their online world in a safe and responsible way. Teaching media literacy can be as simple as encouraging healthy screen habits and helping students think critically about what they see and experience online."
- Minister of Education and Early Years Robin Croucher
The province has taken steps to help young people develop smart screen use behaviours. In fall 2025, Healthy Screen Time Guidelines were introduced in Island schools to help staff make informed decisions about when and how to use technology to support student learning. The guidelines promote student health and well-being through a balanced approach that includes physical activity, social interaction, and hands-on learning.
In June 2026, the province released the Provincial Youth Cyberviolence Prevention Strategy, a cross-government plan to help prevent and protect young people from cyberbullying and other online harm. The provincial government helps put the strategy into action through curriculum, classroom resources, professional learning, and school-based programs.
