Q and A with Scott Anderson, Irrigation Extension Specialist with the PEI Department of Agriculture
What is the role of the Irrigation Extension Specialist?
I work with irrigators across Prince Edward Island to support effective, responsible water use while helping maintain healthy crop production during dry conditions. I can provide guidance on the irrigation permitting process, irrigation system planning and implementation, water-use efficiency, and irrigation best management practices. My goal is to help producers make informed decisions that protect water resources while supporting productive and sustainable farming operations.
What is your background?
I grew up in Morell on a mixed farm of dairy and potatoes. I always knew I wanted a career in agriculture, but I was also passionate about pursuing a degree in engineering. I ended up combining the two and became an agricultural engineer.
After I graduated, I worked with the PEI Department of Agriculture as a Soil and Water Engineer, and later with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada as the Regional Water Engineer, where I worked a variety of research projects surrounding sustainability, crop analysis, and water management.
Why are you passionate about this topic?
With a background in farming, I’m invested in making sure producers who are interested in learning about irrigation are choosing the right systems for their unique operations and using these systems to maximize sustainability and profitability for themselves and their families.
What would you like Islanders to know about this service?
With climate change, we are going to have periods where we need another source of water on the farm, so that producers can continue to grow food for their communities and take care of their livestock.
This role works in collaboration with growers, government, and other industry partners to make sure that irrigators are using water resources responsibly and efficiently. Water management and hydrology are resources. When used correctly, there should not be a shortage.
Who is this service available to?
This service is available to anyone in the Agriculture industry across the island who needs technical support regarding irrigation. This could be any commodity – grains, vegetables, potatoes, berries, specialized organic farms - you name it. In just a few weeks on the job, I’ve already had the opportunity to visit a variety of operations, each one unique, which is why it’s so important to take the time to learn about the many facets of irrigation before you dive in!
How can producers contact you about this service?
Producers can reach out by email or phone at: atlanticwaterpei@gmail.com or phone at (902) 916-0603.
We’ll start by discussing your goals, ideas, and irrigation needs, then arrange a farm visit. From there, I can provide technical guidance, help you navigate the permitting process, and draw on my experience to support the development of an irrigation system that’s right for you.
