Province adds 60 long-term care beds in Summerside
The Government of Prince Edward Island is expanding long-term care capacity in Prince County with a new 60-bed long-term care home that will be developed in Summerside.
Enhanced Living has been awarded the contract to build a private long-term care home that will help address the increasing need while improving access to care for Island seniors.
This project builds on government’s commitment, announced in the 2025 Budget, to add up to 175 new long-term care beds across the province to help meet demand and strengthen the health care system.
Through a 30-year agreement, the province will support the construction and operation of the new home, cover residents’ health care costs, and provide accommodation subsidies. Once the home opens, the province will provide up to $7.4 million annually to help offset accommodation costs for residents.
This announcement builds on the recently announced 80-bed private long-term care home development in Cornwall. The added capacity will help reduce pressure on hospitals and supports Islanders who are waiting for long-term care.
Government continues to plan for future long-term care needs and is advancing additional projects to expand access to care across the province.
In Prince Edward Island, long-term care services are delivered through nine public and 11 private long-term care homes. With this investment, total long-term care capacity will increase to 1,465 beds.
