Infrastructure improvements to support more homes in Three Rivers

The Government of Prince Edward Island is investing close to $2 million to upgrade key infrastructure in Three Rivers, helping make way for more housing, and building on other funding announcements across PEI.

This investment supports the province’s Building Together housing strategy by accelerating housing supply and addressing the needs of a growing population.

“Funding this project demonstrates strong collaboration across all levels to advance shared priorities. We’re building more homes, faster, while strengthening communities across Prince Edward Island.”

-Premier Rob Lantz

The funding will help upgrade the town’s wastewater system. This will make room for more homes and help the community grow with strong, dependable services. The Government of Canada is contributing $2.97 million, and the Town of Three Rivers is providing $990,756, for a total of $5.9 million.

“Three Rivers is a strong, vibrant community, and upgrading infrastructure helps make sure it’s ready for what’s ahead,” said Health and Wellness Minister and MLA for Montague-Kilmuir Cory Deagle. “By improving local infrastructure, we’re making it easier to build more homes and support people who want to live here.”

Infrastructure projects in Alberton, Wellington, Souris, and Morell also received funding through recent announcements.

“One of the biggest barriers to housing and commercial development is having the infrastructure in place to support growth,” said Mayor Debbie Johnston. “This investment will strengthen our water and wastewater systems, improve reliability for existing residents, and create capacity for continued housing and economic development. It is an investment in the long-term future of Three Rivers, and we appreciate the partnership of both the Government of Canada and the Province of PEI in helping us build a stronger community.”

The project is funded through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, part of an $86.2-million agreement to accelerate housing development, support higher-density communities, and meet demand for affordable housing.

“This funding helps get more homes built by making sure communities have the infrastructure they need,” said Housing and Communities Minister Kent Dollar. “It’s a fundamental step toward increasing housing supply and supporting growth across the province.”

The province continues to provide incentives and financial support to increase housing supply, with a focus on higher-density development, in partnership with municipalities and the federal government.
