Province supports housing growth for Souris

The Government of Prince Edward Island is investing more than $3 million in infrastructure to support new housing in Souris, building on recent funding announcements across PEI.

This investment supports the province’s Building Together housing strategy by accelerating housing supply and addressing the needs of a growing population. It reflects continued collaboration with municipalities, the private sector, and the Government of Canada to build more homes, faster, while strengthening communities.

“Investing in infrastructure means investing in people and in the future of our province. Our government is working to make sure Islanders have safe, affordable homes and strong communities. We’re pleased to partner with the Government of Canada and the Town of Souris to help create new housing and support growth for years to come.”

- Premier Rob Lantz

The funding will help the Town of Souris develop a new subdivision connected to East Point Road and MacPhee Avenue. It will open up serviced land to expand housing. By adding new roads and extending municipal services, the project will support a stronger, growing community within municipal boundaries.

“This project is an important opportunity for the Town of Souris to continue growing and expanding housing options for residents. Investments in infrastructure like this play a key role in supporting the long-term sustainability and prosperity of communities like ours.”

- Education and Early Years Minister and MLA for Souris-Elmira Robin Croucher

The Government of Canada is also contributing $4,569,740 and the Town of Souris is providing $1,523,551 bringing the total investment to more than $9.1 million. Recently, funds were also announced for Alberton and Wellington.

“This funding is a significant step forward for Souris. With the support of our federal and provincial partners, we’re able to move ahead with much-needed housing development. This project will help meet growing demand, strengthen our local economy, and give more families the opportunity to call our community home. We’re proud to be part of a collaborative effort that’s building a stronger future for Souris.”

- Mayor JoAnne Dunphy

The project is funded through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, part of an $86.2-million agreement to accelerate housing development, support higher-density communities, and meet demand for affordable housing in PEI.

“This investment is an important step in supporting housing development by removing barriers and creating the right conditions for growth. By working together on these key initiatives, we are helping to increase housing and build stronger communities across the Island.”

- Housing and Communities Minister Kent Dollar

The province continues to provide incentives and investments to increase housing supply, with a focus on higher-density development, in partnership with municipalities and the federal government.
