Historic investments bringing housing stability to Islanders
A new 82-unit social housing development opening this week will help bring greater housing stability and affordability to more Islanders.
The building at 470 Malpeque Road is one of Atlantic Canada’s first wood-built modular housing developments. It includes studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units, as well as 12 accessible units for Islanders on the social housing registry. Rent for social housing is set at 25 per cent of household income, ensuring it remains affordable for low-income Islanders.
“Islanders are facing real pressures and our government is taking practical steps to increase housing supply, improve affordability, and ensure people have access to the safe, stable homes they need to build their future. Over the last number of years, we have made historic investments in housing that not only creates stability for Islanders but strengthens our communities.”
- Premier Rob Lantz
These new units are part of the province’s ongoing efforts to increase housing supply, improve affordability, and support Islanders most in need through its five-year housing strategy Building Together. More than 100 additional government-owned social housing units will open this year. These new units build on the province’s ongoing housing expansion to reduce the social housing registry while improving access to affordable housing for Island families, seniors, and individuals.
“We want to help more Islanders find a place to call home. Each new unit helps reduce the social housing registry and gives someone access to safe, affordable housing. There’s more work ahead, but we’re making real progress and we will keep going.”
- Minister of Housing and Communities Kent Dollar
Since 2019, more than 570 new government-owned social housing units have opened across Prince Edward Island through acquisitions and new construction. Additionally, the province has partnered with private developers to deliver 191 social housing units within mixed housing developments.
