Statement by Premier Rob Lantz on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Hon. Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island, issued the following statement:

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to honour and celebrate the traditions, cultures, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the day, first declared on June 21, 1996, and formerly known as National Aboriginal Day. It is also a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the significant contributions and achievements of Indigenous peoples across Prince Edward Island and Canada.

The Government of Prince Edward Island remains committed to advancing initiatives and programs that support Indigenous communities throughout the province and contribute to the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

All Islanders are encouraged to deepen their understanding of Indigenous cultures and heritage by taking part in events and activities happening across the Island on June 21 and throughout the year. Mi’kmaq culture and history can also be experienced by visiting Abegweit First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation.

Islanders and visitors are invited to join the Native Council of PEI’s celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day at Confederation Landing in Charlottetown on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
