Province invests in infrastructure to support housing growth in Alberton
The Government of Prince Edward Island is investing $1.2 million to support new housing and community growth in Alberton.
This investment supports the province’s Building Together housing strategy by accelerating housing supply and addressing the needs of a growing population. It reflects ongoing collaboration with municipalities, the private sector, and the Government of Canada to build more homes, faster, while fostering strong, vibrant communities.
“Our government is focused on making sure Islanders have access to safe, affordable housing and strong, connected communities. This investment in Alberton will help create new housing opportunities while supporting the infrastructure needed for long-term growth. This means more Islanders can build their lives in communities that are vibrant, inclusive, and built for the future.”

The funding will support development of a new neighbourhood on Dufferin Street, including 20 residential lots, a large commercial lot, a lot for a sports complex with a soccer field, and an active transportation trail for walking and cycling.
“Investing in infrastructure is really about investing in people and the future of our province,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Ernie Hudson. “This project in Alberton is important to the government as it supports the creation of a new neighbourhood where people can live, work, and thrive.”
The Government of Canada is also contributing $1.7 million, and the Town of Alberton is providing $580,000, bringing the total investment to $3.48 million.
“This investment is an important step forward for Alberton,” said Mayor Hector MacLeod. “It will help create much-needed housing and the infrastructure our community needs to grow and thrive.”
The project is funded through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, part of an $86.2-million agreement to accelerate housing development, support higher-density communities, and meet demand for affordable housing in PEI.
“This kind of investment helps get more homes built by putting the right infrastructure in place,” said Housing and Communities Minister Kent Dollar. “It supports steady growth and gives municipalities the capacity they need to add more housing.”
The province continues to provide incentives and financial supports to increase housing supply, with a focus on higher-density development, in partnership with municipalities and the federal government.
