Cooling upgrades for private long-term and community care facilities

The provincial government is investing $3.9 million to upgrade cooling systems in private long-term and community care homes to improve comfort for residents.

The Cooling and Capital Improvement Program is a one-year funding agreement to support cooling and other critical infrastructure improvements. While cooling is the main priority, funding may also be applied to address issues identified in formal building inspection reports.

This program is funded through the Canada-Prince Edward Island Aging with Dignity Funding Agreement, which saw a federal investment of more than $29 million over five years for long-term care and community care in the province.

This investment builds on previous funding, including $500,000 in 2022 through the Safe Long-Term Care Funding Agreement for cooling equipment in common areas and $3.6M in 2024 to install cooling systems in seven publicly operated long-term care homes.

There are nine public and 11 private long-term care homes in PEI, offering 1,325 beds across the province. There are also 36 community care facilities.
