Applications are open for the Correctional Officer Training Program

The provincial government, in partnership with the Atlantic Police Academy (APA), is continuing to help Island residents pursue a career in correctional services at a reduced cost.

The Correctional Officer Training Program develops students’ skills and knowledge in intervention and de-escalation strategies, crisis management, Canadian law, ethics and professionalism, workplace health and safety, and correctional services.

“A resilient correctional services team starts with well-trained, well-supported people. Expanding access to post-secondary education and future employment helps Islanders pursue rewarding careers in public safety.”

- Minister of Justice and Public Safety Bloyce Thompson.

The next cohort will begin on August 17, 2026. This six-month program consists of 17 weeks of coursework followed by a seven-week on-the-job training placement at correctional centres across the Island.

Graduates of the program will receive a Correctional Officer diploma from the Atlantic Police Academy and will be offered an interview for employment at PEI Correctional Services.

Individuals accepted into the program may be eligible for a range of supports, including a substantial tuition reduction.Through SkillsPEI, participants may also receive assistance with costs such as mileage and childcare. Those who are unemployed or underemployed and meet eligibility criteria may qualify for Employment Insurance.

“Partnering with the Atlantic Police Academy to deliver Correctional Officer training helps build strong, thriving communities and meaningful careers for individuals in Prince Edward Island,” said Minister of Workforce and Advanced Learning Zack Bell. “Additional funding through SkillsPEI helps remove barriers and ensures correctional officers can focus on gaining the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.”

The deadline to apply is June 19, 2026.
