Policy changes to Seniors Independence Initiative
The Government of Prince Edward Island is making policy changes to the Seniors Independence Initiative application process effective immediately.
Beginning today, seniors will no longer be required to submit three months of bank statements when applying for the program. Instead, applicants will need to complete an asset declaration form identifying their assets and agreeing that the information may be subject to an audit.
“Today’s announcement responds directly to what we heard from seniors. These changes balance our responsibility to manage public funds with the need to reduce unnecessary administrative burden on people, helping ensure the program remains both accessible and accountable.”
- Minister of Social Development and Seniors Barb Ramsay
The Seniors Independence Initiative helps eligible low‑income seniors live independently in their own homes by providing funding for practical supports such as housekeeping, meal preparation, and home maintenance. The program is available to Islanders aged 65 and older who live independently and meet income and asset criteria.
Updated application information and forms are available through the Department of Social Development and Seniors, and on the program website.
