Recreational Fishing Season Opens April 15
The recreational fishing season opens on April 15, and the province is encouraging Islanders and visitors to take part in one of Prince Edward Island’s popular outdoor activities.
Angling licences are required by everyone 16 years of age and older. Children under 16 years of age do not require an angling licence. Adults teaching children under 16 years of age how to fish do not need a licence provided they are not fishing themselves.
“Each year, more than 11,000 angling licences are issued across the province, highlighting the continued popularity of recreational fishing on Prince Edward Island. Whether you’re an experienced angler or trying it for the first time, fishing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends.”
- Minister of Land and Environment Darlene Compton
Anglers are asked to report any tagged trout they catch, particularly in the Morell and Winter Rivers. Fish tagging helps biologists monitor sea run trout populations. Please retain the tag or take a photo and call the number on the tag. A small prize will be provided for each tag reported.
Invasive species are a growing concern in rivers throughout the region, and anglers are encouraged to report any unusual fish caught in PEI ponds and rivers by calling 902-368-4683. One invader that has been showing up more frequently is the brown bullhead, a type of small catfish. Any brown bullheads caught should be kept and not returned to the water.
Anglers are reminded to follow all regulations and help protect local waterways by preventing the spread of invasive species.
Angling licences are available at local vendors, Access PEI sites, and online.
