Province opens new session of the Legislative Assembly with Speech from the Throne focused on Our Future
The third session of the Sixty-seventh General Assembly of Prince Edward Island opened today with the reading of the Speech from the Throne by His Honour, Dr. Wassim Salamoun, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island.
The Speech sets out government’s priorities for the months ahead, with a focus on strengthening healthcare, securing a reliable energy future, improving affordability, and ensuring responsible management of land.
The Speech recognizes the pressures Islanders are facing—from rising costs to growing demand on services—and outlines a plan to respond with steady, responsible decisions while continuing to invest in Islanders and their future.

Highlights from the Speech include:
Healthcare
- Connecting more Islanders to primary care through team-based care and expanded patient medical homes
- Growing and training our healthcare workforce to strengthen access now and in the years ahead
- Improving how care is delivered by reducing administrative burden, expanding scopes of practice, and using technology to support patients and providers
Energy
- Advancing a new approach to energy planning focused on reliability and long-term capacity
- Strengthening connections to the regional grid and investing in critical infrastructure
- Ensuring the public utlity is accountable and working in the best interest of Islanders
Affordability
- Taking a balanced approach to ensure supports are working and there when Islanders need them
- Focusing supports where they are needed most, while reviewing programs to ensure they are effective, sustainable, and delivering for Islanders
- Creating the conditions for good-paying jobs that help Islanders afford everyday essentials +
Land
- Strengthening transparency and oversight in land use and ownership
- Reviewing the role of IRAC to ensure decisions reflect the public interest
- Continuing to protect land for future generations
