Statement by Premier Rob Lantz on International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Premier of Prince Edward Island Rob Lantz issued the following statement:

“Tomorrow marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed every year on March 21 to recognize the injustices and prejudices that stem from racial discrimination.

This day honours the memory of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre when police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire on a peaceful demonstration against apartheid pass laws, tragically killing 69 people.

The Government of PEI is dedicated to ending racial discrimination by removing the systemic and structural barriers that still exist. Through the Anti-Racism Office, we work with departments across government to help advance the goals of the Prince Edward Island Anti-Racism Action Plan with a focus on reviewing policies and aligning legislation to support long-term sustainable change.

Across the Island, communities are leading the way in promoting inclusion and standing up against racism. Our government is proud to support this important work through Anti-Racism Grants and Microgrants, which empower community-led initiatives to create real and lasting institutional change.

I want to acknowledge the resilience and solidarity our communities continue to show as they stand together against hate, inequity, and racism.

As we remember the challenges of the past, let us also recognize the ongoing systemic experiences of racialized people today and commit to building a safe, inclusive, and supportive province for everyone.”
