Statement by Minister Ramsay on Down Syndrome Awareness Day
Minister of Social Development and Seniors Barb Ramsay issued the following statement:
“Tomorrow, March 21, is World Down Syndrome Day observed globally to celebrate the contributions of people with Down Syndrome and to recognize them as respected and included members of society.
This year’s theme, Together Against Loneliness, highlights the importance of belonging, meaningful connections and inclusion.
In Prince Edward Island, this day is formally recognized under the Down Syndrome Day Act, proclaimed in 2020. The Act shows our province’s commitment to respecting the dignity and value of people with Down Syndrome, recognizing their important contributions to our communities, and supporting their independence and right to make their own choices.
The day is marked on March 21 (3/21) because people with Down Syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21, which is unique to them.
On Down Syndrome Awareness Day, we encourage Islanders to celebrate inclusion and to honour the exceptional strengths, talents and contributions of people with Down Syndrome.
Working together we can continue to build welcoming communities where everyone is supported and respected.”
